Remembering Tom Alf

Hamilton City Schools will be closed Monday in memory of school board member Tom Alf, who passed away this week at the age of 70. Alf was a long time teacher and administrator in the district, and just last week won re-election to the school board. Alf's career in education spanned over 40 years, and also included positions in the New Miami and Talawanda school districts. He was a teacher at Roosevelt Junior High, as well as George Washington and Garfield Junior Highs. Alf also served as assistant principal and principal at Garfield Middle School, and Hamilton High School.
Alf was a 1967 graduate of Garfield High School, and received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Miami University. Alf made headlines this past summer when he walked from his Hamilton home to a Reds game at Great American Ballpark to mark his 70th birthday. Visitation will be held 2pm-6pm Sunday at Hamilton High School, and funeral services will take place at 10am Monday at Sacred Heart Church in Fairfield.

Butler County Readies For First Snow Of The Season

(Wilmington)--Butler County may see it's first measurable snowfall of the season. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for 1-to-3 inches of snow between the hours of 6:00pm this afternoon and 8:00am tomorrow. Temperatures will plunge into the teens, which will make for some slick spots during the morning rush hour. The Butler County Engineer's Office is ready after holding their annual snow and ice roadeo this past Thursday. A release from the Engineer's Office says they begin the season with 13,000 tons of salt, stored in two barns. Last year, the county used 4,696 tons of salt, which is significantly less than the average of 6,200 spread in a typical winter.
