HAMILTON — As health officials continue investigating the multistate Cyclospora outbreak linked to fresh produce, a Hamilton-based indoor farming company says its products are not affected. 80 Acres Farms has posted a message reassuring customers that its leafy greens are grown indoors using a hydroponic system, eliminating exposure to soil and open irrigation water—two of the primary ways Cyclospora contamination can occur. The company says its produce is grown in a closed water system, with largely automated harvesting and packing to reduce human handling. It also says products typically reach store shelves within two days of harvest. A banner across the company's website reads, "Romaine Calm," adding that its products are not impacted by the current outbreak. While 80 Acres says no food production system is completely risk-free, the company says its indoor growing process is designed to eliminate the contamination pathways associated with the current Cyclospora outbreak.
