COACH RAMSEY IS IN HIS 23RD SEASON AS THE HEAD COACH OF THE PANTHERS. DURING HIS TENURE, HE HAS COLLECTED 176 WINS, LED ELDER TO 16 GCL TITLES, 16 PLAYOFF APPERANCES, 2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND 4 STATE FINAL APPERANCES, INCLUDING 2019. COACH RAMSEY’S 23 YEARS IS THE 2ND LONGEST TENURE AT ELDER BEHIND LEGENDARY PANTHER COACH J. WALTER BARTLETT AND HIS 176 WINS MARKS THE MOST WINS IN PANTHER FOOTBALL HISTORY.  

 

THE 2019 PANTHERS ARE LED BY A TALENTED GROUP OF SENIORS. MATTHEW LUEBBE IS A 1ST TEAM ALL-OHIO QB WHO HAS THROWN FOR 2,968 YARDS AND 27 TDS WHILE RUSHING FOR 1,606 YARDS AND 16 TDS. TE JOE ROYER ALSO EARNED 1ST ALL-OHIO HONORS GRABBING 15 TDS AND COLLECTING 1,237 YARDS AND JOSEPH CATANIA SCORED 11 TIMES OUT OF THE BACKFIELD. ON DEFENSE, 3RD TEAM ALL-OHIO DB COLTON SANDHAS LEADS THE TEAM WITH 121 TACKLES AND LB CONNOR KEYES HAS A TEAM HIGH 10.5 SACKS.

 

ELDER FINISHED THE REGULAR SEASON AT 8 – 2 AND STAND AT 12 – 2 OVERALL AFTER PLAYOFF VICTORIES OVER LAKOTA WEST (42-17), ST. XAVIER (28-24), COLERAIN (28-21) AND SPRINGFIELD (31-24). THE PANTHERS WILL FACE PICKERING CENTRAL FOR A DIVISION 1 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY, 8PM AT HALL OF FAME STADIUM IN CANTON. ELDER BEAT PICK CENTRAL IN THE STATE SEMI-FINALS IN 2008, THE LAST TIME THE PANTHERS MADE THE FINALS.

LASALLE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH PAT MCLAUGHLIN

 

COACH MCCLAUGHLIN IS IN HIS 3RD YEAR LEADING THE LANCERS. THE 1996 MOELLER GRAD WAS AN ASSISTANT AT HIS ALMA MATER FROM 2006 – 2014 BEFORE BECOMING THE HEAD COACH AT READING. AFTER TWO SEASONS WITH THE BLUE DEVILS, MCLAUGHLIN TOOK OVER THE PRINCETON FOOTBALL PROGRAM WHERE THE VIKINGS WENT 6 – 4 FOR THEIR FIRST WINNING SEASON SINCE 2011. AFTER ONE YEAR AT PRINCETON HE LEFT FOR LASALLE WHERE HE HAS GONE 25 – 10, A GCL CHAMPIONSHIP AND TWO PLAYOFF APPERANCES INCLUDING A TRIP TO THE STATE FINAL FOUR THIS SEASON.

 

THE 2019 LANCERS WON THE GCL AT 3 – 0 AND ARE IN THE D-2 STATE SEMI-FINALS FOR THE 4TH TIME IN THE LAST 6 YEARS. DUEL-THREAT JR QB ZACH BRANAM LEADS LASALLE’S POTENT OFFENSE PASSING FOR 1,214 YARDS AND 16 TDS WHILE RUSHING FOR 891 YARDS AND 9 TDS. SR RB CAM PORTER HAS COLLECTED 14 TDS ON THE GROUND AND 2 RECEIVING TDS. TWO-WAY PLAYER, SO GI’BRAN PAYNE HAS 8 TDS ON THE GROUND AND HAS CAUGHT 2 TDS ON OFFENSE WITH 2 INTERCEPTIONS ON DEFENSE, RETURNING ONE FOR SIX. ON THE DEFENSE, SR LB LUKE THIEMANN LEADS THE LANCERS WITH 92 TACKLES AND JR DB JAYMAR HARGROVE-MUNDY IS THE TEAM LEADER IN INTERCEPTIONS WITH 6.

 

LASALLE HAS BREEZED THROUGH THE FIRST 3 WEEKS OF THE PLAYOFFS WITH WINS OVER LITTLE MIAMI, 42-0, WALNUT RIDGE, 35-7 AND DOWNED HARRISON IN THE REGIONAL FINALS, 45-8. THIS WEEK, THE LANCERS HAVE A SEMI-FINAL MATCHUP WITH TOLEDO CENTRAL CATHOLIC ON FRIDAY AT SIDNEY HIGH AND ARE LOOKING TO REPEAT THEIR LAST 3 TRIPS TO THE FINAL 4 WITH A 4TH STATE TITLE.

COLERAIN HEAD FOOTBALL COACH SHAWN CUTRIGHT

 

COACH CUTRIGHT IS IN HIS FIRST SEASON AS THE HEAD COACH OF THE CARDINALS WERE HE CONTINUED THE DOMINANCE OF COLERAIN FOOTBALL IN THE GMC IN 2019 BY LEADING THEM TO THEIR 20TH CONSECUTIVE GMC TITLE.  CUTRIGHT WAS HIRED BY KERRY COOMBS IN 2005 AND WAS PROMOTED TO DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR BY TOM BOLDEN IN 2008. IN 2013, COACH CUTRIGHT WAS NAMED ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR BY THE SOUTHWEST OHIO FOOTBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION.

 

THE 2019 CARDINALS FINISHED UNBEATEN IN THE GMC AND 11-1 OVERALL HEADING INTO THE REGIONAL FINALS. THE VAUNTED CARDINAL TRIPLE-OPTION OFFENSE IS LED BY JR QB FREDDIE JOHNSON WHO HAS THROWN FOR 486 YARDS AND 5 TD’S WHILE RUSHING FOR 630 YARDS AND 11 TDS. SR RB JAYLEN THOMAS LEADS THE TEAM IN RUSHING YARDS WITH 962 AND TDS WITH 9 AND SR FB HAMZAH ABDUL-WAHEED HAS COLLECTED 6 TDS AND 602 YARDS ON THE GROUND. ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL, JR LB XANDER KENDALL LEADS THE CARDINALS IN TACKLES WITH 71, JR DL DONTAY CORLEONE IS TOPS WITH 8.5 SACKS AND SR DESHAWN PACE LEADS THE TEAM WITH 5 INTERCEPTIONS.

 

COLERAIN OPENED THEIR PLAYOFF RUN WITH A 30 – 7 WIN OVER PRINCETON AND KNOCKED OFF FAIRFIELD FOR THE 2ND TIME IN 3 WEEKS, 28 – 7, IN THE REGIONAL SEMI-FINALS LAST WEEK. THIS WEEK, THE CARDINALS WILL FACE ELDER IN THE REGION 4 FINALS FOR THE 2ND CONSECUTIVE YEAR. COLERAIN BEAT THE PANTHERS LAST SEASON 42 – 0 ON THEIR WAY TO A D-1 STATE FINAL 4.

ST. XAVIER HEAD FOOTBALL COACH STEVE SPECHT

 

COACH SPECHT IS IN HIS 16TH YEAR COACHING HIS ALMA MATER. OVER THAT SPAN, THE BOMBERS HAVE WON 143 GAMES, MADE THE PLAYOFFS 15 OF THE 16 YEARS AND CLAIMED 3 STATE TITLES (2005, 2007, 2016). THE 2016 BOMBERS FINISHED THE REGULAR SEASON 5 – 5 BEFORE GOING ON AN IMPROBABLE 5 GAME WINNING STREAK IN THE POSTSEASON WITH 3 OVERTIME VICTORIES INCLUDING THE TITLE GAME AGAINST CLEVELAND ST. IGNATIUS. COACH SPECHT HAS BEEN NAMED GCL COACH OF THE YEAR 7 TIMES AND IN 2012 HE WAS HONORED AS THE DON SHULA NFL HIGH SCHOOL COACH OF THE YEAR.

 

THE 2019 BOMBERS FINISHED THE REGULAR SEASON AT 8 – 2 AND EARNED A #1 SEED IN THE D-1 REGION 4 BRACKET. ST. XAVIER IS LED ON OFFENSE BY SR QB MATTHEW RUEVE WHO HAS THROWN FOR 2,873 YARDS AND 27 TD.  JR WR LIAM CLIFFORD HAS BEEN THE MAIN TARGET WITH 73 RECEPTIONS FOR 1,093 YARDS AND 12 TD’S WHILE SR TE MARSHALL LANG HAS COLLECTED 10 TD’S ON 79 RECEPTIONS. SR RB KELLEN NEWMAN LEADS THE GROUND GAME WITH 838 YARDS AND 9 SCORES. ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL, SR LB TJ O’MALLEY AND JR DL GIOVANNI ALBANESE HAVE 7 SACKS APIECE AND JR LB MATTHEW DEVINE LEADS ST. XAVIER WITH 89 TACKLES.

 

ST. XAVIER KNOCKED OUT MASON IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS LAST WEEK, 48 – 20 AFTER BEING DOWN 20 -13 AT THE HALF. THIS WEEK, THE BOMBERS WILL MEET THE ELDER PANTHERS IN A REGIONAL SEMI-FINAL AT MASON HS ON FRIDAY. THE PANTHERS EDGED OUT THE BOMBERS 31 – 28 IN WEEK 6 AND FRIDAYS MEETING WILL BE THE 101ST FOOTBALL MEETING BETWEEN THE TWO GCL PROGRAMS.

MASON HEAD FOOTBALL COACH BRIAN CASTNER

 

COACH CASTNER IS IN HIS 10TH YEAR LEADING THE COMET FOOTBALL PROGRAM. HE HAS ACCUMULATED 65 WINS AS A HEAD COACH AND HAS LED THE COMETS TO SIX PLAYOFF APPERANCES, 5 CONSECUTIVE TRIPS TO THE POSTSEASON INCLUDING THIS SEASON. BEFORE TAKING OVER THE MASON PROGRAM, CASTNER WAS AN ASSISTANT AT FINNEYTOWN, MASON AND ST. XAVIER. COACH CASTNER ALSO COACHED MASON SOFTBALL FOR 9 SEASONS, LEADING THE LADY COMETS TO THE STATE FINAL 4 IN BOTH 2007 AND 2008 AS WELL AS A GMC TITLE IN HIS FINAL YEAR IN 2010 WHILE ALSO EARNING THE LEAGUES COACH OF THE YEAR HONOR. THE COACHING BLOODLINE RUNS DEEP IN THE CASTNER FAMILY. BROTHERS STEVE (LAKOTA EAST SOFTBALL) AND KEITH (LAKOTA WEST SOFTBALL) ARE MEMBERS OF THE OHSFSA HALL OF FAME AND HIS OTHER SIBLINGS GARY AND DAN ALSO COACH IN THE LAKOTA SCHOOL DISTRICT.

 

THE 2019 COMET FOOTBALL TEAM STARTED THE SEASON IN A HOLE, LOSING THEIR FIRST 3 GAMES, BUT A 3 GAME WINNING STREAK AND AN UPSET VICTORY, 35 – 19, OVER PRINCETON IN THE FINAL WEEK OF THE SEASON EVENED THEIR OVERALL RECORD AT 5 – 5 AND EARNED THE COMETS A SPOT IN THE D-1 REGION 4 PLAYOFFS. SR QB COLLIN BROWN LEADS THE GMC’S #1 PASSING OFFENSE WITH 1,557 YARDS AND 15 TD’S WHILE SR WR ALEC DARDIS HAS COLLECTED 448 YARDS AND 6 TD CATCHES. JR RB NOLAN MC CORMICK CARRIES THE LOAD FOR THE MASON GROUND GAME WITH 619 YARDS AND 4 TD. ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL, SR LB JACK HAGLAGE HAS 62 TACKLES, A SACK AND AN INTERCEPTION AND A PAIR OF JUNIOR D-LINEMEN, NICK WADSWORTH AND JAXON ORLAND, HAVE SACKED OPPOSING QBS 4 AND 2 TIMES RESPECTIVLEY.

 

THE #8 SEEDED COMETS WILL TRAVEL TO #1 SEED ST. XAVIER FOR AN OPENING ROUND PLAYOFF GAME ON FRIDAY.

LAKOTA WEST HEAD FOOTBALL COACH TOM BOLDEN

 

COACH BOLDEN IS IN HIS 1ST SEASON AT LAKOTA WEST AFTER SPENDING THE LAST 17 YEARS AT COLERAIN. A 1988 COLERAIN HIGH GRADUATE, BOLDEN TOOK OVER THE CARDINAL PROGRAM IN 2007 GOING 142 – 21 OVER 12 SEASONS. DURING HIS TENURE, THE CARDS WON 12 GMC TITLES WHILE LOSING ONLY ONE CONFERENCE GAME IN 2008, AND MADE 11 PLAYOFF APPERANCES INCLUDING 3 REGIONAL TITLES AND A STATE RUNNER-UP IN 2018. COACH BOLDEN HAS LED THE FIREBIRDS TO A 6 – 3 OVERALL RECORD AND 5 – 2 IN THE GMC. WEST WILL BE MAKING THEIR FIRST PLAYOFF APPERANCE SINCE 2014 THIS SEASON.

 

THE 2019 FIREBIRDS ARE LED BY A TALENTED GROUP OF SENIORS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL. SR RB AND MIAMI UNIVERSITY COMMIT DAVID AFARI HAS CARRIED THE BALL FOR 888 YARDS AND 15 TDS WHILE COLLECTING 211 YDS AND 3 TDS RECEIVING. SR WIDEOUT KURT RIESENBURG HAS 215 YDS AND A TD RECEIVING. FR QB AND COACHES SON, MITCH BOLDEN HAS GROWN INTO THE ROLE BY THROWING FOR 538 YDS AND 6 TDS. THE GMC’S 3RD RANKED DEFENSE IS LED BY SR DL GARREN CARTER HAS 40 TACKLES AND 6 SACKS WHILE SR LB DAVID JONES HAS 43 TACKLES AND 3.5 SACKS.

 

LAKOTA WEST WILL HOST THE MIDDLETOWN MIDDIES THIS WEEK TO CLOSE OUT THE REGULAR SEASON. THE FIREBIRDS GOT BEHIND EARLY LAST WEEK AT PRINCETON BUT THEIR COMEBACK CAME UP JUST SHORT, WITH THE VIKINGS HOLDING ON FOR A 41 – 35 VICTORY.

BADIN HEAD FOOTBALL COACH NICK YORDY

 

COACH YORDY IS IN HIS 3RD YEAR LEADING THE BADIN FOOTBALL PROGRAM AND IS ONLY THE 4TH HEAD FOOTBALL COACH IN BADIN HISTORY. YORDY IS A 1997 GRADUATE OF BADIN HIGH AND WAS INDUCTED INTO THE BADIN ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME IN 2017. IN HIS FIRST YEAR AT BADIN, THE RAMS WENT 5 – 5 BUT IN 2018 THE RAMS WENT 7 – 3 IN THE REGULAR SEASON, CAPTURED A GCL CO-ED CENTRAL DIVISION TITLE AND MADE IT TO THE 2ND ROUND OF THE DIVISION 3 PLAYOFFS. BEFORE GETTING HIS FIRST HEAD COACHING JOB AT HIS ALMA MATER, COACH YORDY SPENT 7 YEARS AS THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AT MT. HEALTHY, SERVED IN THE SAME ROLE AT ROSS AS WELL AS AN ASSISTANT AT NEW MIAMI TO BEGIN HIS 18 YEAR COACHING CAREER.

 

THE 2019 BADIN SQUAD ENTERS WEEK 9 WITH A 5 – 3 RECORD. THE RAMS BEGAN THE SEASON WITH A PAIR OF HEARTBRAKING LOSES; AN OVERTIME LOSE TO ROSS WEEK 1 AND FELL SHORT OF A COMEBACK VICTORY ON THE ROAD AT TALAWANDA IN WEEK 2. BADIN BOUNCED BACK WITH 4 CONSECUTIVE VICTORIES, INCLUDING A 42 -7 WEEK 6 WIN OVER ALTER THAT BROKE A 20 YEAR LOSING STREAK TO THE KNIGHTS. THE RAMS ARE LED BY A STRONG GROUP OF SENIORS. SR QB ZACH SWITZER HAS THROWN FOR 1,250 YARDS AND 12 TDS, SR RB ALEX DELONG HAS RUSHED FOR 701 YARDS AND 10 TDS, SR WR JOSH HEGEMANN HAS COLLECTED 506 RECEIVING YARDS AND 6 TDS AND SR WR MARSHAL FLAIG HAS 446 YARDS AND 3 TDS THROUGH THE AIR WHILE ALSO RUSHING FOR 152 YARDS AND A TD ON THE GROUND. A PAIR OF SR STANDOUT LINEBACKERS HAS LED THE BADIN DEFENSE; EVAN SCHLENSKER LEADS THE TEAM IN TACKLES WITH 61 WHILE KEEGAN GORMLEY FOLLOWS WITH 50.


THIS WEEK BADIN TRAVELS TO 4 – 4 CARROLL LOOKING FOR A 3RD STRAIGHT VICTORY OVER THE PATRIOTS AND CONTINUE THEIR QUEST TO REACHING THE D-3 PLAYOFFS.

COACH KRAUSE IS IN HIS 9TH SEASON LEADING THE FAIRFIELD FOOTBALL PROGRAM AND 23RD YEAR AS A HEAD FOOTBALL COACH. THE INDIANS HAVE GONE 53 – 39 SO FAR UNDER KRAUSE AND HAVE MADE THE POSTSEASON 5 OF THE LAST 6 SEASONS INCLUDING THE LAST 4 YEARS  IN A ROW. KRAUSE BEGAN HIS HEAD COACHING CAREER AT LOCKLAND, FOLLOWED BY TIME AT STEBBINS BEFORE GOING TO MONROE IN 2004. IN 4 SEASONS AT MONROE THE HORNETS WON 3 LEAGUE TITLES AND MADE 3 PLAYOFF APPERANCES INCLUDING THE DIVISION 3 STATE SEMI-FINALS IN 2007. IN 2008, COACH KRAUSE MOVED TO MIDDLETOWN WHERE IN 3 SEASON THE MIDDIES WENT 26 -7, MADE THE PLAYOFFS TWICE AND WENT 10 – 0 IN THE 2010 REGULAR SEASON AND EARNED A CO-GREATER MIAMI CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP. IN 2009 KRAUSE WAS NAMED THE DIVISION 1 OHIO COACH OF THE YEAR AND HIS 2008 MIDDIE SQUAD WAS THE LAST GMC TEAM TO BEAT COLERAIN.

  

THE 2019 INDIANS ARE 7 – 0 FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY, THEY ARE RANKED #3 IN THE D – 1 AP STATE POLL AND ARE #1 IN THE LATEST OHSAA D – 1 REGION 4 COMPUTER RANKING FOR THE PLAYOFFS. FAIRFIELD IS LED BY SEVERAL STANDOUT PLAYERS THAT INCLUDES SR RB JUTAHN MCCLAIN (KENTUCKY COMMIT) WHO LEADS THE GMC IN RUSHING YARDS (1,291), TD’S (15) AND YPG (184.4). SR SAWAIHA ELLIS (TOLEDO COMMIT) IS A DUAL-THREAT QB (766 YARDS, 3 TD PASSING; 306 YDS, 8 TD RUSHING) AND WIDEOUT DASHAWN SIMPKINS HAS COLLECTED 219 YARDS AND 2 SCORES RECEIVING. THE GMC’S #1 DEFENSE IS LED BY SR DEFESIVE LINEMAN L J FRANCE (34 TACKLES, 8.5 SACKS), SR LB PHOENIX PORTER (45 TACKLES) AND JR DL BRANDON SMITH (39 TACK, 8 SACKS).

COACH DANIELS IS IN HIS 3RD YEAR LEADING THE VIKING FOOTBALL PROGRAM. DANIELS IS A 2003 GRADUATE OF PRINCETON HIGH WHERE HE STILL HOLDS OR SHARES SEVERAL SCHOOL RECORDS, WAS NAMED THE 2002 OHIO DIVISION 1 STATE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AND WAS INDUCTED INTO THE PRINCETON ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME IN 2013. HE ALSO WAS A GRIDIRON STANDOUT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI PLAYING FOR BRIAN KELLY. COACH DANIELS WAS A BEARCAT CAPTAIN IN 2007 AND EARNED THE JIM KELLY SPIRIT AWARD THAT SAME YEAR. PRIOR TO BEING NAMED THE HEAD COACH AT PRINCETON IN 2017, DANIELS COACHED AT STATESBORO HIGH IN GEORGIA BEFORE LANDING AT KENNESAW STATE UNIVERSITY AS AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR.

 

PRINCETON ENTERS WEEK 7 4 – 2 OVERALL AND 2 – 2 IN THE GMC. THE VIKINGS HAVE WON TWO STRAIGHT CONFERENCE ROAD GAMES OVER LAKOTA EAST AND MIDDLETOWN AND ARE CURRENTLY #6 IN THE D – 1 REGION 4 OHSAA FOOTBALL COMMUTER RATINGS. THE VIKINGS ARE LOADED WITH NCAA D-1 TALENT LED BY A PAIR OF OHIO STATE COMMITS SR OL PARRIS JOHNSON JR AND DL DARRION HENRY (28 TACKLES, 3 SACKS) AS WELL AS SR LB’S JAHEIM THOMAS (UC COMMIT, 39 TACKLES, 2 SACKS) AND JUAN JARRETT (KANSAS COMMIT, 19 TACKLES) AND SR DB ELIJAH EBERHARDT (BOWLING GREEN COMMIT, INT). SR QB MYJADEN HORTON (4 PASSING TDS, 6 RUSHING TDS) HAS SEVERAL COLLEGIATE OFFERS  AND JR THOMAS BOYD (6 TDS) WILL HAVE COLLEGE COACHES KNOCKING ON HIS DOOR.

 

PRINCETON HAS A HUGE GMC MATCHUP THIS WEEK WHEN THEY HOST UNBEATEN AND STATE RANKED FAIRFIELD (6 – 0) AT PAT MANCUSO FIELD AT VIKINGS STADIUM. THE LAST TIME VIKINGS BEAT THE INDIANS WAS AT HOME IN 2011.

WINTON WOODS HEAD FOOTBALL COACH ANDRE PARKER

 

COACH PARKER IS IN HIS 10TH SEASON AS THE HEAD COACH AT WINTON WOODS. A WINTON WOODS GRAD, PARKER WAS THE DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR OF THE 2009 DIVISION 2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WARRIOR TEAM AND TOOK OVER AS THE HEAD MAN IN 2010. WINTON WOODS ENTERS WEEK 6 AT 4 – 1, WITH WINS OVER TROTWOOD-MADISON, WEST CLERMONT, UPPER ARLINGTON AND MOELLER. THE WARRIORS LONE LOSS CAME AT THE HANDS OF DEFENDING DIVISION 1 STATE CHAMPION LAKEWOOD ST. EDWARD LAST WEEK. THE WARRIORS ARE LED IN PART BY A TRIO OF COLLEGE D-1 TALENTS, SR RB MIYAN WILLIAMS (IOWA STATE), SR WR DEMEER BLANKUMSEE (TOLEDO) AND SR CB MIQUAN GRACE (RUTGERS) AS WELL AS A PAIR OF OUTSTANDING JUNIORS, LB ANDREW BOOKER AND QB MI’CHALE WINGFIELD.

COACH HUBBARD IS IN HIS 2ND YEAR AT NEW MIAMI. IN HIS FIRST YEAR A SEASON AGO, THE VIKINGS STARTED THE SEASON 0 – 3 BUT WON THEIR FINAL 5 GAMES TO FINISH 6 – 4 AND EARNED A SPOT IN THE DIVISION 7 PLAYOFFS. COACH HUBBARD SPENT 4 YEARS AS AN ASSISTANT AT LITTLE MIAMI AND 2 YEARS ON THE STAFF AT HIS ALMA MATER, EDGEWOOD, BEFORE BECOMING THE HEAD MAN AT NEW MIAMI. SUCCESS IN ATHLETICS RUNS DEEP IN THE HUBBARD FAMILY. HUBBARDS FATHER, WALT, IS A MEMBER OF THE NEW MIAMI ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME, HIS COUSIN ROCKY LED PRINCETON BASEBALL TO A STATE FINAL 4 IN 2005 AND HIS UNCLE, LEGENDARY HALL OF FAME COACH BEN, LED FAIRFIELD TO A 1986 DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL STATE TITLE. BOTH ROCKY AND BEN ARE ON THE CUURENT VIKING STAFF.

 

THE 2019 VIKINGS ARE OFF TO A 4 – 0 START, THE FIRST TIME NEW MIAMI HAS DONE THAT SINCE 1980. THEY ARE COMING OFF BACK TO BACK ROAD VICTORIES AND HAVE OUTSCORED OPPONENTS 133 – 24 INCLUDING A PAIR OF SHUTOUTS. THE VIKING OFFENSE IS LED BY A QUARTET OF JR’S; QB TREY ROBINETTE (616 YARDS, 7TD’S PASSING, 107 YARDS, 5TD’S RUSHING), RB JORDAN ROBINETTE (384 YARDS, 2 TD’S), RB DYLAN SPIVEY (211 YARDS, 3 TD’S) AND WIDEOUT DEANZA DUNCAN (457 YARDS, 6 TD’S). ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE, SR DL ZACH TRENT HAS COLLECTED 5 QB SACKS, SPIVEY HAS GOTTEN TO THE QB 3 TIMES AND DUNCAN HAS 3 INTERCEPTIONS THROUGH 4 GAMES.

TALAWANDA HEAD FOOTBALL COACH LARRY COX

 

COACH COX IS IN HIS 1ST SEASON AS THE HEAD COACH OF THE TALAWANDA BRAVE AFTER TAKING A YEAR OFF FROM COACHING. COX SPENT 21 YEARS AT LAKOTA WEST FROM 1997-2017, GOING 114 – 103 AS THE SCHOOLS FIRST HEAD FOOTBALL COACH.  THE FIREBIRDS MADE 5 PLAYOFF APPERANCES DURING HIS TENURE INCLUDING A DIVISION 1 REGIONAL SEMI-FINAL IN 2014, AND WERE CO-GREATER MIAMI CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS IN 2009 AND 2013. COACH COX EARNED ASSOCIATED PRESS SOUTHWEST OHIO COACH OF THE YEAR HONORS IN 1999 AND 2006. BEFORE HIS TIME AT LAKOTA WEST, COX SPENT 2 YEARS AS THE HEAD COACH AT BELLBROOK AND BEFORE THAT AN ASSISTANT AT HAMILTON FOR 7 YEARS.

 

TALAWANDA IS COMING OFF A 2 – 8 2018 CAMPAIGN AND WENT 5 – 35 OVER THE PREVIOUS 4 SEASONS. HOWEVER, THE 2019 BRAVE ARE OFF TO A SIZZLING START. THE OFFENSE IS LED BY SENIOR QB ADAM CRANK, WHO MISSED MOST OF 2018 DUE TO AND INJURY, AS WELL AS SR RB TERRELL WILLIS (315 YARDS, 5 TDs) AND SO RB DEONDRE BOTHAST-REVALEE (314 YARDS, 5TDs). SO LB ZACH FLANNERY LEADS THE DEFENSE WITH A PAIR OF SACKS AND JR DB KASEY THURMAN HAS COLLECTED AN INTERCEPTION AND RECOVERED A FUMBLE THROUGH THE FIRST 3 WEEKS OF THE SEASON.

 

TALAWANDA HAS OPENED 2019 UNBEATEN AND ARE 3 – 0 FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1991, A TALAWANDA SQUAD THAT WENT 10 – 0 IN THE REGULAR SEASON AND DEFEATED PRINCETON IN ARGUABLY ONE OF THE GREATEST UPSETS IN OHIO HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF HISTORY. IN WEEK 1 THE BRAVE ROLLED PAST PREBLE SHAWNEE AT HOME 41 – 7 AND HELD OFF BADIN IN WEEK 2, 24 – 17. LAST WEEK TALAWANDA WAS ON THE ROAD FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON AT EATON AND SHUT OUT THE EAGLES IN THE 2ND HALF ENROUTE TO A 44 – 14 VICTORY. THIS WEEK THE BRAVE ARE BACK HOME WHERE THEY WILL HOST THE 1 – 2 NEW RICHMOND LIONS.

HAMILTON HEAD FOOTBALL COACH NATE MAHON

 

COACH MAHON IS IN HIS 1ST SEASON LEADING HAMILTON BIG BLUE FOOTBALL. MAHON SPENT THE PREVIOUS 3 YEARS AT LITTLE MIAMI WHERE HE WENT 19 – 13 INCLUDING A 9 – 3 MARK IN 2018, LEADING THE PANTHERS TO THEIR FIRST PLAYOFF APPERANCE AND VICTORY SINCE 1992. COACH MAHON ALSO SPENT 3 SEASONS AT NORTHWEST WHERE THE KNIGHTS EARNED THEIR FIRST PLAYOFF VICTORY IN SCHOOL HISTORY IN HIS 1ST YEAR. MAHON IS A 2003 HAMILTON GRAD WHERE HE EARNED 7 VARSITY LETTERS IN BOTH FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL AND WAS SELECTED 5 TIMES TO ALL-GREATER MIAMI CONFERENCE TEAMS COVER BOTH SPORTS. COACH MAHON WAS INDUCTED INTO THE HHS ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME IN 2018.

 

FOR 2019, THE BIG BLUE RETURNS 14 OF 22 STARTERS INCLUDING A PAIR OF 2018 1ST TEAM ALL-GMC HONOREES; JR LB LUKE MATTIA AND SO RB KEYSHAWN STEPHENS. SOPHMORE RB KALEB JOHNSON LEADS THE TEAM IN RUSHING THROUGH THE FIRST 2 GAMES WITH 193 YARDS AND JR QB QUINCY SIMMS-MARSHALL IS BACK AND HEALTHY, THROWING FOR 268 YARDS AND 2 TOUCHDOWNS SO FAR THIS SEASON. SR LB JAYDEN MARSHALL LEADS THE BIG BLUE DEFENSE IN TACKLES (15) AND SACKS (2.5) TO START THE SEASON.

 

HAMILTON OPENED THE SEASON WITH A 21 – 7 ROAD WIN AT WEST CLERMONT AND MOVED TO 2 – 0 BY DOWNING ANDERSON LAST WEEK, 28 – 14. THE 2019 2 – 0 START IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2016 THAT THE BIG BLUE HAS STARTED UNBEATEN THROUGH THE FIRST 2 GAMES AND LOOK TO MATCH THE 2016 SQUAD BY MOVING TO 3 – 0 WHEN THEY HOST LAKOTA WEST THIS WEEK TO OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY AT VIRGIL SCHWARM STADIUM. THE LAST TIME HAMILTON BEAT WEST AT HOME WAS IN 2010, THE LAST YEAR THE BIG BLUE HAD A WINNING RECORD AND MADE THE PLAYOFFS.

COACH COMMINS IS IN HIS 3RD SEASON AS THE HEAD COACH AT ROSS WHERE HE HAD BEEN AN ASSISTANT COACH FOR 4 YEARS INCLUDING THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR IN 2015 AND 2016. COACH COMMINS HAS 18 YEARS IN COACHING HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL THAT INCLUDES NOT ONLY ROSS BUT ALSO TIME AT OAK HILLS AND HIS ALMA MATER, MT. HEALTHY. IN HIS FIRST SEASON, AFTER INSTITUTING THE TRIPLE OPTION ON OFFENSE, THE RAMS WENT 1 – 9 AND 0 - 6 IN THE SOUTHWEST OHIO CONFERENCE. IN YEAR TWO, THE RAMS IMPROVED TO 5 – 5, 2 – 4 IN SWOC PLAY, GOING 3 – 2 OVER THE FINAL 5 WEEKS OF THE SEASON THAT INCLUDED A HOME VICTORY OVER SWOC CHAMPION EDGEWOOD, 10 – 6. COACHING RUNS DEEP IN THE COMMINS FAMILY TREE AS BROTHER KURRY COMMINS IS THE CURRENT HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AT MARIEMONT.

 

THIS SEASON, ROSS IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THEIR PROGRESS, LED BY SR LINEBACKER ETHAN MILLS AND JR OFFENSIVE LINEMAN KADEN ROGERS, BOTH 2ND TEAM ALL-SWOC PERFORMERS IN 2018. THE RAMS ON OFFENSE ARE LED BY JR QUATERBACK CJ BOZE AND TALENTED RUNNING BACKS, SR ETHAN HALL AND JUNIOR FULLBACK JACKSON GIFFORD.

 

ROSS OPENED THE 2019 SEASON WITH BUTLER COUNTY RIVAL BADIN, IN THE BATTLE OF THE RAMS, WITH ROSS EARNING THEIR FIRST EVER VICTORY OVER BADIN IN A 20 – 19 OVERTIME THRILLER AT VIRGIL SCHWARM STADIUM. THE RAMS HAD LOST THE PREVIOUS 14 MEETINGS TO BADIN/HAMILTON CATHOLIC IN A SERIES DATING BACK TO 1959.

 

THIS WEEK, ROSS CHRISTENS THEIR NEW FIELD-TURF PLAYING SURFACE AT THE BARN WHEN THEY HOST ANOTHER BUTLER COUNTY RIVAL, THE MONROE HORNETS, AND LOOK TO START A SEASON 2 – 0 FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2014.
